Ryūsei

“Oh, crap!” I yelled. “What are they doing here?”

“Ishikawa-san?” Officer Matsue’s gruff voice bellowed from outside. “Are you all right? Please tell me they didn’t get you!”

“What’re we gonna do?” Tsukiha asked.

“You go on ahead,” I said, panicked and heart racing. “Make your way to the police station. The detective’s still being held there. I have a hunch that the Nukekubi will be there, too.”

“What about you?”

I glanced at my crutches. “It’s not like I can get very far like this. I’ll try to explain the situation to him and see if he can help us out.”

“Are you sure? I’m your Guardian, you know. I should stick by your side.”

“I’ll be fine. But the detective might not be. Just go!”

She nodded, hesitated for a moment, then broke the rest of the window with the hilt of her blade. She stepped out onto the balcony and turned to me.

“Be careful, okay?”

“You, too.” The fox girl disappeared over the railing.

Seconds later, the entrance door burst open and a squad of officers swarmed into the apartment. When they came into the living room, they gasped at the sight of the corpse and drew their weapons on me.

“Freeze!” one of them barked. “Hands in the air!”

“Aw, c’mon, guys. Really? If I do that, I’m gonna lose my balance and—”

“Hands up! Now!”

“Fine, fine,” I sighed. I let go of the crutches and they fell to the floor with a clang. Trying to keep my balance, I hopped on my right foot. Soon enough, I lost control and collapsed. My wrists tightened and I heard the sound of metal clicking together. They’d cuffed me.

Officer Matsue hurried into the room and examined the body, then hung his head in shame. “I was too late. I’m so sorry, Ishikawa-san.” He turned his attention to me and glared. “You monster! I’ll make sure you rot in a cell for the rest of your life.”

“Wait!” I pleaded, lying on my stomach and chin. “It’s not what it looks like! The real Officer Ishikawa’s actually—”

“Shut up!” He delivered a kick to my ribs.

I groaned and grimaced. He kicked again and again. The pain from his abuse and the pain still rocking my broken leg overwhelmed my system. The room turned blurry and swirled around me. I lost consciousness as they dragged me outside.
